Original Mirrycle Assembly Instructions

Original Mirrycle Mirror Parts

WARNING

Objects you see in this mirror are closer than they appear.  This is a convex mirror and it makes an object appear smaller and more distant than the object really is.

INSTRUCTIONS

Style 1. Dia-Compe, Shimano 600, Schwinn, Weinmann
1.  Disconnect the brake cable from the brake which is activated by the left-hand brake lever (The Mirrycle can also be mounted to the right-hand brake lever bracket).

2.  Remove the brake cable housing and pull the brake cable out of the brake lever.  (examine the brake cable for any broken strands or worn areas and replace it if necessary.)

3.  Remove any cable nipples from the lever bracket.

4.  Unscrew the lock nut from the hollow bolt.  Insert the hollow bolt through the opening in the lever bracket.  Be sure that the rim washer remains on the hollow bolt between the mirror stem and the lever bracket.  If your lever bracket has a rubber hood, put a drop of soap on the mirror stem and use a twisting motion to help you fit the mirror stem into the hole in the rubber hood.  If necessary trim the rubber around the hole slightly.

5.  Slip the lock nut inside the lever bracket and start to screw it on to the hollow bolt.  Place the nut wrench that is included over the lock nut.  Stick the Allen wrench that is included through the holes in the end of the nut wrench.   Now tighten the hollow bolt from the outside using a 1/2" wrench.  THE MIRROR STEM SHOULD BE MOUNTED SO IT POINTS UPWARD AND FORWARD.  THE MIRROR ARM STICKS OUT TO THE LEFT.

6.  Attach the mirror arm to the mirror stem.  Put three small washers on a cap screw and insert the cap screw into the hole in the elbow end of the mirror arm.   Now put a big washer on the cap screw and screw it into the mirror stem and tighten it using the hex wrench.  The cap screws fit very tightly so don't worry about breaking it as you screw it in.

7.  Attach the mirror holder to the mirror arm.  Use the Allen screw and washers which are enclosed.  Be sure that the head of the Allen screw fits into the countersunk hole of the mirror holder and the mirror arm.

8.  Replace the brake cable and cable housing.  Make sure that the cable housing fits down into the hollow bolt.  Reconnect the brake to the cable and adjust.

Style 2. Brake Lever with adjusting tubes.
1.  If your brake lever has an adjusting tube attached and is one of the Dia-Compe, Schwinn, or Weinmann type, the MIRRYCLE can be installed without any alteration to the lever bracket.  Screw the adjusting nipple off of the adjusting tube, slip the mirror stem over the adjusting tube.  You will not need to use the rim washer.
Adjusting Tube
2.  If your brake cable does not have an adjusting barrel at another point, i.e. on the adjusting barrel from your local bike shop.  Make sure the adjusting barrel you get has a not on it and that the threaded end fits inside the hollow bolt.

3.  Fit the adjusting barrel into the hollow bolt and proceed as in Style 1.

Threaded Insert
Style 3. New Gran Compe, Shimano Z Style
For these style levers we have included a special brass insert which is used in place of the lock nut.  For some Gran Compes, you may need to drill out the hole in the bracket to 1/4".

Style 4. Campagnolo, Mafac, SunTour, Superbe.
We recommend that you use a drill press and a drill press vise to do the work on Style 4 brakes.
1.  Remove the brake lever assembly from the handlebar.  If your brake has a rubber hood, remove it.  Also remove any cable nipples and adjusting barrels.

2.  Place the lever bracket in a vise.  Line up the hole so you will be drilling it out at the same angle as the original hole.

3.  Drill the hole out using a 13/64" drill bit.

4.  Tap the hole using a 1/4 - 28 tap.  Since you have tapped the hole, you will not need to use the lock nut to attach the Mirrycle.  The hollow bolt is screwed directly into the lever bracket.

5.  Put the rubber hood back on.  Some Mafac rubber hoods cannot be used with the Mirrycle.  A rubber hood (either a Weinmann or Dia-Compe) can be purchased at a bike shop and will fit the Mafac bake very well.  For certain other brake lever brackets you may have to trim the rubber around the hole slightly.

6.  Install the Mirrycle as illustrated for Style 1 and/or Style 2.

SUGGESTION

When riding off road on trails or in the woods, it's a good idea to pivot the mirror head out of the way of objects you might run into.  Be sure to readjust the mirror when you get on roads again.
